Background of the study
Ensuring secure access to library facilities is a critical concern for academic institutions. AI-powered facial recognition technology offers an innovative solution for enhancing security by verifying the identity of users in real time. At Plateau State Polytechnic Library in Barkin Ladi, this technology is employed to streamline access control and monitor entry and exit points. Facial recognition systems analyze biometric data to provide secure, efficient, and contactless verification, thereby reducing unauthorized access and ensuring the safety of library resources (Aminu, 2023). The implementation of this technology also minimizes the need for traditional ID cards and manual checks, improving overall user experience. Continuous updates and learning algorithms enhance accuracy over time; however, challenges such as privacy concerns, potential errors due to lighting or facial obstructions, and high implementation costs persist. This study examines the impact of AI-powered facial recognition on secure library access and evaluates how it contributes to improved security protocols and user convenience (Ibrahim, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite the advantages of facial recognition technology in securing library access, Plateau State Polytechnic Library faces challenges in its practical implementation. Issues include privacy concerns from users, occasional recognition errors due to environmental factors, and the high costs associated with system maintenance. These challenges may compromise the reliability and acceptance of the technology, affecting the overall security of the library. The study aims to identify these challenges and propose strategies to improve the effectiveness and user acceptance of the facial recognition system (Olu, 2024).
Objectives of the study
To evaluate the impact of AI-powered facial recognition on library security.
To identify challenges affecting system accuracy and user acceptance.
To propose strategies for optimizing facial recognition technology.
